Tales of Henry in the 1850s

From the Powell Family Papers

The Powells arrived in 1852 from Virginia, joined the  Henry community, and built a home at 516 Market Street.

​

Their unpublished papers leave us voices from the steamboat era that tell stories of local residents, of parties at the Lombard house, and town drama.

​

The Powells record rich detail. From their letters, we can peer through a window of Henry in the 1850s.

​

Lloyd Powell's death was among the first in the Civil War. Learn who he was and why his death was recorded in newspapers across the country.

​

Katharine Hepburn was one of Hollywood's all-time greats. Hear how she had strong ties to Henry.
