Tales of Henry in the 1850s

From the Powell Family Papers

The Powells arrived in 1852 from Virginia, joined the  Henry community, and built a home at 516 Market Street.

Their unpublished papers leave us voices from the steamboat era that tell stories of local residents, of parties at the Lombard house, and town drama.

The Powells record rich detail. From their letters, we can peer through a window of Henry in the 1850s.

Lloyd Powell's death was among the first in the Civil War. Learn who he was and why his death was recorded in newspapers across the country.

Katharine Hepburn was one of Hollywood's all-time greats. Hear how she had strong ties to Henry.
