Presenting A Civil War Project

IN SEARCH OF THE

POWELLS

PROJECT BACKGROUND

I am researching the Civil War experience of Harriet Lee Powell and her family.  This site provides an overview of that research, my background, contact information, and summaries of research adventures. This endeavor began when I volunteered in an online Civil War transcription project.  I ultimately focused on the letters of one young woman and her family who had a captivating tale. They were educators of young women, but the chaos of the Civil War sent them fleeing to live separate lives as refugees. Their separation produced an enormous archive of letters detailing their experience, including those of Hattie and her sisters who worked as teachers in large homes across the state. I have traveled throughout Virginia to track down the locations where they lived, the people they knew, and the events they witnessed.
